HOLLYWOOD - Sean Connery has announced he will not be returning for the next film in the Indiana Jones franchise.

The 76-year-old had been tipped to reprise his role from 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as Harrison Ford's screen father, but has now confirmed he is sticking to his 2005 resolution to quit acting.

He says, "I thought long and hard about it, and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film.

"I love working with Steven (Spielberg) and George (Lucas), and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun."

Elsewhere, John Hurt has been added to the cast. It is unclear what character the veteran star will play, but he is joining Ford, Shia LaBeoufCate Blanchett and Ray Winstone on the movie.

Connery adds, "This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, 'Break a leg, everyone.' I'll see you at the theatre."
