Trembling Spector a shadow of former genius

Some worry that fragile music producer can't handle lengthy trial

LOS ANGELES - Pale, gaunt, his hands trembling, Phil Spector sits silently in a Los Angeles courtroom, a shrunken shadow of the man who revolutionized pop music 40 years ago.

On trial for the murder of a woman he barely knew, Spector stares ahead, sometimes shaking his blond page-boy mop in despair, as the eccentricities once associated with musical genius become the prosecution backdrop to a heinous crime.

With a three-month trial ahead of him, and the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted, Spector, 67, looks barely able to stay the course.

“He looks terrible. I am very concerned about his appearance. He is shaking a lot. He may be a very sick man,” said Stan Ross, the co-founder of Hollywood’s famed Gold Star Recording Studios where Spector created his innovative 1960s ”Wall of Sound” technique.

“I don’t like seeing him in this predicament. I don’t think he can handle three months,” Ross, who has known Spector for 50 years, told Reuters.

Celebrated by the music industry as one of the greatest artists of all time for producing classics such as The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin”’ and The Beatles’ “Let It Be” album, the reclusive Spector remains an enigma to the general public.

Spector, who told British reporter Mick Brown in 2002 that he had a bipolar personality and was manic depressive, denies shooting dead B-movie actress Lana Clarkson, 40, in the hall of his mock castle in February 2003.

“Spector looks pretty frail, but on the other hand he looks pretty weird,” said Stan Goldman, criminal law professor at Loyola Law School.

“He looks like someone who’s walked out of Penny Lane. He is wearing these 3-inch Cuban heels, the long overcoat jackets with the very brightly colored shirt. He looks like someone the Beatles might have talked to in the 1970s,” said Goldman.

Spector’s lawyers plan to use his frailty to bolster their argument that he did not pull the trigger on the gun that killed Clarkson.

Lawyer Linda Kenney Baden told jurors last week that Spector’s shaking hands were a side effect of medication he takes, and noted that he was only 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed a mere 130 pounds.

Long cry from Spector's glory days
The trial, which resumes on Monday, is a far cry from the heady 1960s when Ross recalls a serious but insecure Spector at the start of his career in Gold Star Recording Studios.

“They say genius runs strangely. He was a methodical person who had a fixation on creating sounds that he wanted and I, as the technician, was able to come up with those sounds.

“It was revolutionary because he used a big orchestra with rock and roll guitars. He used not just one piano player but three, not two guitars but four. That was what made his sound different -- it was big,” Ross said.

Ross last saw Spector about two years before his arrest, at the annual parties Spector threw for friends in Los Angeles.

“He is not a sinister person. He does not have murder in his heart. He loved everybody he worked with. They were the only friends and family he knew.

“He is talented. But when God gives someone talent sometimes he takes something away,” Ross said.

Alec Baldwin's Request to Quit TV Show Denied

Alec Baldwin

HOLLYWOOD - Troubled actor Alec Baldwin has had his request to leave TV show 30 Rock denied, because despite recent criticism over a leaked telephone rant, he is still "an important part" of the program.

Baldwin has been attacked by family groups after calling his 11-year-old daughter Ireland a "rude, thoughtless little pig" during a recorded telephone rage, which was aired on TMZ.com.

The Departed star submitted a formal request to leave the comedy yesterday, because he didn't want the rest of the cast and crew to be "hurt by the situation" surrounding his bitter custody battle with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

But broadcasters NBC have refused to let him out of his contract, which sees Baldwin star as a slimy but charming network executive in charge of a prime-time talk show.

A statement released by NBC says, "Alec Baldwin remains an important part of 30 Rock. We look forward to having him continue his role in the show."

A close pal of Baldwin's confirmed the actor will complete his obligation to the program, despite telling talk show The View early yesterday he "couldn't care less" if he never acted again.

Tyra Banks Pays Up After Lunch Bill Slip-Up

Tyra Banks

HOLLYWOOD - Former supermodel Tyra Banks made good on a promise to pay an unpaid restaurant bill this morning after New York's Daily News 'outed' her following a 'dine and dash' controversy.

Banks was dining with pal Russell Simmons and his two daughters at New York's Brooklyn Diner on Saturday and left without paying.

The retired catwalk star claims she was convinced rap mogul Simmons had taken care of the $100 lunch bill and was left red-faced when she read the Daily News piece.

She says, "We're getting up and I'm like, 'Russell, I got it (bill),' and I'm opening up my wallet and (he said), 'No Tyra, I got it...' We leave and I read the damn Daily News and they're saying that I'm cheap and I didn't pay the bill."

Banks owned up to the error during an appearance on TV talk show The View this morning, promising restaurant bosses she'd pay up immediately after the show - and she made good on her word.

The model not only turned up in person to apologize, she paid what she owed and offered her waiter a hefty $100 tip.

And now she wants an explanation from Simmons: "I couldn't even find his butt... He didn't think I paid, he said he was gonna pay and he didn't... It's embarrassing."

Alec Baldwin Makes TV Apology, Consults with Dr. Phil

Alec Baldwin

LOS ANGELES - Actor Alec Baldwin will apologize to his daughter on national television on Friday for calling her a "thoughtless little pig," according to excerpts from a pre-taped ABC interview released on Thursday.

Appearing on The View for his first TV interview since he left a ranting voice-mail message to his 11-year-old daughter that was made public last week on the Internet, Baldwin also said he was ready to give up acting after nearly 30 years.

Baldwin, embroiled in a bitter, six-year custody dispute with his ex-wife, actress Kim Basinger, said he wanted to lobby for reforms in divorce, parental visitation and custody laws.

"I would like to devote myself to the cause of parental alienation," the 49-year-old star said on The View airing on Friday. He added that he was finishing work on a book about divorce that is due for publication in September.

Baldwin said he has asked the NBC network to let him quit his co-starring role as an egoistic TV executive on the popular sitcom 30 Rock.

But the network indicated it would not let Baldwin out of his contract. "We look forward to having him continue his role in the show," NBC said. The network already had renewed the series for a second season.

Meanwhile, television therapist Dr. Phil McGraw revealed that Baldwin had called him for advice on Thursday and that the two had a "far-reaching, intense conversation" about the actor's daughter and his former spouse.

McGraw, who offered on the CNN talk show Larry King Live to counsel the family, said Baldwin had given him permission to disclose that they had talked and that he also had "reached out privately" to Basinger.

Baldwin drew a storm of media attention and public outrage last week when the celebrity Web site TMZ.com posted a recording of a phone message he recently left for his daughter, Ireland, berating her as a "rude, thoughtless little pig."

In the voice mail, Baldwin said he was furious at not being able to reach her for a prearranged phone conversation.

"Obviously, calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and inappropriate, and I apologize to my daughter for that," Baldwin said. "There's nothing wrong with being frustrated or angry... I took it out on the wrong person."

A Los Angeles family law judge who listened to the tape suspended Baldwin's visitation rights last week and set a hearing for May 4, at which time Baldwin could face further restrictions on his contact with the child.

A separate court hearing was set for June 5 on how the voice-mail tape was released to the media.

Sam Raimi 'Too Exhausted' for 'Spider-Man 4'

Sam Raimi

HOLLYWOOD - Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has raised doubts over his involvement in a fourth installment of the web-slinging superhero, because he is "exhausted."

The film's stars, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, have both recently voiced their interest in making another Spider-Man movie, but only if the main cast and crew are all on board.

And while Raimi hasn't ruled out a return to the action comic, he admits it'll be a few years before he attempts to come up with another plot line for Peter Parker and his alter ego to save New York City.

He says, "I'm just exhausted, and I need to get away from it for a while."

Box Office Becalmed Before 'Spidey' Bow

The Invisible Movie Still

LOS ANGELES - The weekend box office is likely to take another hit as moviegoers ignore the new arrivals ahead of next Friday's launch of Spider-Man 3.

Fresh from his surprise hit Ghost Rider, Nicolas Cage has the unenviable task of trying to generate some excitement with the thriller Next, in which he plays a Las Vegas magician who battles terrorists.

The Paramount Pictures release will vie with the new Disney teen mystery The Invisible to end the two-week reign of Disturbia, also a Paramount film.

Also entering the fray are Lionsgate's action movie The Condemned, starring "Stone Cold" Steve Austin; and Yari Film Group's Kickin It Old Skool, starring Jamie Kennedy.

The PG-13 Next, directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day), boasts the tagline, "If you can see the future, you can save it," which sounds like a spin-off from NBC's Heroes.

When it comes to opening movies, Cage's track record veers wildly, but he posts his best numbers with action fare. Most recently, he propelled Ghost Rider to a $45.4 million opening in February. In 2004, National Treasure enjoyed a $35.1 million bow. Next, though, isn't looking as if it's anywhere in that territory and will probably score a minor victory if it crosses the $10 million mark.

The PG-13 Invisible stars Justin Chatwin--who played Tom Cruise's son in War of the Worlds--as a seemingly dead teen who must solve the mystery of his demise: It's like he's a dead guy who can see living people.

Directed by David S. Goyer--a fan favorite for his work as a writer on the Blade and Batman franchises--the film could yet surprise as Disturbia did, particularly if it inherits some of the Disturbia teen crowd. But right now, it appears to be aiming for $10 million at the high end.

The R-rated Condemned should have a lock on World Wrestling Entertainment fans as they cheer on Austin, playing a prisoner dropped off on a desert island where he must fight for his life against nine other condemned inmates--think Survivor with real consequences. It, too, will be aiming for that $10 million mark if all goes well.

In Skool, Kennedy plays an '80s breakdancer who awakes from a 20-year coma to confront the modern world. Harvey Glazer makes his directorial debut with the PG-13 comedy. It will likely be consigned to the lower range of the single-digit millions.

Among the exclusive openings, Sony Pictures Classics will raise the curtain on Ray Lawrence's Jindabyne, an Australian film inspired by the Raymond Carver short story So Much Water So Close to Home, which also provided one of the story threads for Robert Altman's Short Cuts.

ThinkFilm is offering Robinson Devor's R-rated Zoo, his documentary about a Seattle man who had what proved to be a fatal attraction to horses.

Sarah Silverman Hosting MTV Movie Awards

LOS ANGELES - Comedian Sarah Silverman will host the MTV Movie Awards, which will be broadcast live on June 3 from the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal Studios Hollywood.

David Goyer to Direct 'X-Men' Spin-Off

X-Men: The Last Stand Movie Stills

HOLLYWOOD - Batman Begins writer David Goyer is setting his sights on another superhero property--he is directing the spin-off movie to the X-Men trilogy, Magneto.

The movie will focus on the young Magneto, the villain of the X-Men pictures, and how he became mortal enemies with character Professor X, played by Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart in the trilogy.

The main characters in the spin-off will be played by actors in their twenties instead of the original cast.

Goyer has previously worked on superhero movies Batman Begins and the Blade trilogy as well as new movie The Invisible.

John Carpenter Dismisses Need for Movie Censorship

HOLLYWOOD - Veteran director John Carpenter has defended violence in movies, arguing there is no need for the government to regulate what can be watched at the cinema.

The Halloween filmmaker was speaking on Thursday at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

He said, "Real life causes this; fake life does not cause it. The reason for a lot of these movies is the culture that we live in, the events that have gone on in our world.

"Censorship never works, you cannot destroy an idea. You can hide, you can try to cover it up, but you can't destroy it--it will be there and it will bubble up again."

Carpenter's comments came a day after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a report linking exposure to violence in the media with aggressive behavior in children.

HOLLYWOOD - Anna Nicole Smith's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead is tempted to lead an anonymous life with his baby daughter Dannielynn, despite being inundated with media job offers.

Birkhead was this week given permission to leave the Bahamas and return home to the U.S. with Dannielynn.

But Birkhead isn't sure he's liking his time in the spotlight.

He says, "A lot of people are calling. There's a script for a movie, some TV, an entertainment correspondent for a show, things like that.

"Maybe I'll just go off into the sunset with my daughter. I don't want to live under the microscope like Anna.

"I want to make a difference for my daughter. Maybe we'll live a quiet life by the beach, or go back to where I'm from, or find a place to start new.

"I want to take a few months off to get to know my daughter and for her to get to know me."

Paris Hilton
HOLLYWOOD - Singer/socialite Paris Hilton has inspired an anti-drunk-driving public service announcement.

In January, Hilton was sentenced to 36 months probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines after she pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving stemming from a September arrest.

Now artist Daniel Edwards has unveiled a life-size clay sculpture of a naked Hilton called 'Paris Hilton Autopsy'--it comes complete with an attached sculpture of her dog, Tinkerbell.

The art installation is designed to combat "the disturbingly glamorized trend of Hollywood's girls gone wild."

Hilton is one of a handful of celebrities to have been charged with drunk driving in Los Angeles in recent months, including her pal Nicole Richie and actress Michelle Rodriguez.

Movie Stars Turn Coachella Festival Into Desert Hollywood

Cameron Diaz

HOLLYWOOD - Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Jason Statham and Adam Brody have been giving the three-day Coachella Festival some real star power, heading out to the California desert to catch acts like Bjork, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the reformed Jesus & Mary Chain.

Diaz joined Barrymore and Alba backstage on the festival's first-ever Friday but appeared to be solo as she wandered around the VIP area alone before the Red Hot Chili Peppers' performance last night.

Wearing all white and a pair of beige knee-high boots, Diaz was by far the most fashion-conscious person at the festival, as she spent 15 minutes trying to avoid the star spotters backstage while frantically texting friends.

Johansson was the only mainstream movie star to actually take to the stage--she crept on to perform "Just Like Honey" with the Jesus & Mary Chain on Friday night. The song appeared on the soundtrack to the actress' hit film Lost in Translation.

The Transporter star Statham rocked out to the Red Hot Chili Peppers last night, while former O.C. actor Brody chilled out with friends backstage.

Among the other movie stars spotted at Coachella were Danny DeVito, who was at the festival for a second consecutive year, porn star Ron Jeremy, who introduced controversial rocker Peaches on Friday night, and Scottish actress Kelly MacDonald, who joined husband Dougie Payne and his band Travis backstage last night.

And while we're about it, Jesse Metcalfe is no longer on our buddy list.

Yes, he's handsome. Yes, his body is fairly buff.

But if the chat about him not being entirely into Nadine is true, then consider us ripping up his poster right now.

And now we've got some pictorial evidence of Jesse out on the town with a brunette.

Sure, it might be his sister or a platonic friend, but it could also be Nadine's replacement.

And so we're judging.
