The "Hello" singer admits he has no idea whether reports Nicole is pregnant and engaged to marry her boyfriend, Good Charlotte front man Joel Madden, are true.
And Richie is grateful he didn't have to endure the media scrutiny Nicole is under during his '70s heyday in the Commodores.
He tells FoxNews.com, "She's just in an unfortunate situation. There's just so much information out there right now--MySpace, cell phones, the Internet.
"If we had all that when the Commodores were around, God only knows what my mother and father would have seen."
But Richie believes Nicole, who entered rehab in 2003 after being arrested for possession of heroin and is due in court in July to contest a driving-under-the-influence charge, is a normal 25-year-old.
He adds, "She keeps apologizing to me. I told her, 'You're doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing to your father at this age.'"
