Cops are refusing to reveal details of the probe.
LAPD spokesman Jason Lee says, "For reasons of law and confidentiality that are critical in such investigations, no additional information will be released."
Playboy bosses have no knowledge of the investigation, but publicity director Rob Hilburger has speculated it may be linked to a confrontation at Hefner's Midsummer Night's Dream part on Saturday, between a woman and her ex-boyfriend.
According to reports, the woman had taken out a restraining order on the man and contacted security when he attempted to talk to her.
Hilburger says, "We obviously take this very seriously and we want to help anyway we can."
