Madonna Dismisses Adoption Problem Reports

Madonna

HOLLYWOOD - Singer Madonna has denied reports the adoption of baby Malawian David Banda has hit a snag after conflicting accounts of a key welfare official's flight to the U.K.

On Saturday the director of Malawi's child welfare services, Penston Kilembe, said financial and administrative difficulties had prevented him from traveling to London in May to determine whether Banda can be officially adopted by Madonna and her husband, Guy Ritchie.

Kilembe added that the adoption process may now "crumble," 10 months after the couple brought the child back to the U.K. from a Malawian orphanage last October.

But Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, says, "The information regarding the adoption that was reported is simply not accurate.

"The adoption process is going along very well and according to proper procedure."

The High Court of Malawi appointed Kilembe to visit Banda in his new home twice before deciding whether Madonna's adoption should be formalized in a hearing next year.
