HOLLYWOOD - Britney Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline is refusing to berate his former wife in public, insisting any issues he has to discuss with her will be done behind closed doors.

Spears' mothering skills of the couple's two children--Sean Preston, 22 months, and Jayden James, 10 months--have been criticized in the media over the past year and the pop star's recent behavior on video and photo shoots have raised questions about her emotional state.

Federline and Spears' marriage officially ended on Monday after just 33 months. They split last November, only two months after the birth of Jayden James.

The aspiring rapper's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, admits his client treats his two boys very differently from their mother. The couple share custody of the two boys.

Kaplan says, "When they are with him, he is going to shield his children from unwanted media attention. You will not find a picture of Kevin parading with the children out in a public place.

"He's focused right now on being the best parent that he can be.

"He doesn't want to do anything that would be perceived as taking her (Spears) down a peg. His goal is to keep things between him and Britney private. There's a proper forum to discuss issues with a co-parent. That place is not in the public eye."
