Rihanna and Kanye West also have multiple nominations with five apiece, while British star Amy Winehouse collected three nods at a nominations launch held in New York Tuesday afternoon.
Timberlake's "What Goes Around...," Knowles' "Irreplaceable," Rihanna's "Umbrella," West's "Stronger" and Winehouse's "Rehab" are all up for Video of the Year, alongside Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."
West, Timberlake, Akon, Robin Thicke and T.I. are nominated for Male Artist of the Year, while Winehouse, Knowles, Rihanna, Fergie and Nelly Furtado are fighting it out for Female Artist of the Year.
Best New Artist nominees are Winehouse, Carrie Underwood, Gym Class Heroes, Lily Allen and Peter, Bjorn and John.
Rihanna's globe-conquering Jay-Z collaboration, "Umbrella," is also one of 10 singles nominated for Monster Single of the Year.
The awards will be handed out at Las Vegas' Palms Casino Resort on Sept. 9.
