The actress brought her partner Brad Pitt and children to India last year to make the film adaptation of Mariane Pearl's book about the kidnap and murder of her husband, Wall Street Journal report Daniel Pearl, by Islamic extremists.
English filmmaker Winterbottom is known for his realistic, fly-on-the-wall style of filming techniques, which sometimes irked Jolie, who wanted time away from the cameras.
She says, "It could get intense. Michael and I would have disagreements over where he could follow me.
"We didn't want it to be too melodramatic or too polished. We didn't want it to be a typical movie."
