Vanessa Hudgens: 'You Just Have To Be Smart About Your Decisions'

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 18, 2007) – Vanessa Hudgens branded the headline grabbing activities of peers like Britney Spears “stupid,” in an interview on “The Tyra Banks Show.”

Hudgens was asked by an audience member on the September 17 episode of Tyra’s show, how the activities of her fellow young stars like Brit and Lindsay affect her personally.

“I honestly just think it’s stupid,” she told the audience member. “I mean it’s easy to stay out of those situations. I really think it’s easy to stay out of those situations, you just have to be smart about your decisions.”

Hudgens’ comments were taped prior to photos of the 18-year-old appearing in the buff, surfacing on the web.

Earlier this month, personal photographs of Vanessa were circulated on the internet. Her publicist confirmed the pictures were of the “High School Musical” star, in a statement.

“This was a photo which was taken privately,” a statement from Hudgens’ rep read. “It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public.”

Shortly thereafter, Hudgens herself apologized in a statement to her fans.

“I want to apologize to my fans, whose support and trust means the world to me,” the starlet wrote in a statement. “I am embarrassed over this situation and regret having ever taken these photos. I am thankful for the support of my family and friends.”

Disney, the makers of “High School Musical” and “High School Musical 2,” said Hudgens was still in negotiations for the third installment of the popular series, despite the controversy over the photos.

“Vanessa has apologized for what was obviously a lapse in judgment,” Disney Channel spokeswoman Patti McTeague told the Associated Press. “We hope she’s learned a valuable lesson.”

As for the rest of the actress’s appearance on Tyra’s show, Hudgens revealed she likes to keep her personal life to herself, but the supermodel still probed about Zac Efron.

“It’s fun to work with him. He’s really sweet and like, singing all the songs is always a blast,” is all Hudgens would offer about her boyfriend.

Until, that is, Tyra asked if he was a good kisser.

“Mmmmmm,” she said dreamily. “I’m keeping my mouth shut!”

One thing Hudgens didn’t keep her mouth shut about, is her celebrity crush – Matt Damon.

“I love Matt Damon and I was like 14 years old and I met him ‘cause I was doing a press junket for an old movie I did called ‘Thunderbirds,’’’ she recalled. “He walked past my door and I completely freaked out, like I did to him what my fans do to me. I was like, ‘oh my gosh, I love you so much, can I have your autograph!’

“He gives me his autograph, my mom comes over with the camera and I was like ‘oh my gosh can I have a picture with you too?’ And it was kind of sad because a whole bunch of people do it to me and I was doing it him,” she blushed.

NEW YORK, New York (September 18, 2007) – As was announced on Monday, Barry Manilow did not make his appearance on “The View” Tuesday due to differences with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

And while the he said/they said of who exactly cancelled Manilow’s appearance continues, Barbara Walters discussed the issue with Bill Geddie during the launch of Walters’ weekly SIRIUS satellite radio show “Barbara Live” on Monday night.

While Manilow claims he backed out of his scheduled gig when the show wouldn’t accommodate his request to remove Hasselbeck, sources close to “The View” claimed the “Copacabana” singer was “lying,” and that it was the show who told Manilow not to show up.

On Walters’ radio show, Geddie, who co-executive produces “The View” with Walters, maintains it was the show’s decision for Manilow not to appear.

“He said, ‘I’ll do Barbara and Whoopi or I’ll do Whoopi and Sherri or some combination, but I won’t sit with Elisabeth,’ and I said ‘Well, then you won’t be on the show. It’s that simple,’” Geddie explained. “And that was the end of it. He’s not going to call the shots. You’re not going to tell me how to produce the show.”

And while Walters said she understands Manilow’s friendship with Rosie, at the same time, her show is all about promoting different lines of thought.

“If you disagree with somebody’s political point of view you don’t come on? We’re called ‘The View’ because we have different points of view,” Walters said. “Also, Elisabeth Hasselbeck is not an enemy of Rosie’s. None of us are. If Elisabeth disagrees with Rosie, and Rosie disagrees with Elisabeth…nobody is to my knowledge is taking sides.”

On Monday, Manilow posted the following message on his Web site:

“I wanted to let you know that I will no longer be on The View tomorrow as scheduled. I had made a request that I be interviewed by Joy, Barbara or Whoopi, but not Elisabeth Hasselback [sic]. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out. It’s really too bad because I’ve always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs. The good news is that I will be on a whole slew of other shows promoting the new album so I hope you can catch me on those.”

However, sources close to “The View” insisted he is “lying” and was making a bigger issue out of it only to promote his new album.

Manilow has been making the rounds promoting his upcoming “Greatest Songs of the Seventies,” which is in stores today.

As Walters and Geddie wrapped their chat about the singer, Geddie said ultimately when you come on “The View,” it’s an all or nothing scenario.

“He’s always seemed like a nice guy, but I don’t get him on this. We’re ‘The View,’ we have people with different opinions,” Geddie concluded. “You sit with one of us, you sit with all of us.”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 18, 2007) – Three years ago today, September 18, they surprised us all with a wedding. Now, the battle between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline takes a stunning turn.

One new claim, made in OK! magazine, is that Britney is battling an eating disorder.

A source told the magazine that Spears will do anything to lose weight, including starving herself as well as binging and purging.

A pal reportedly told OK! that Spears said, “I’ll starve myself because I’m fat.”

OK! magazine’s source also alleges Britney is addicted to diet pills and combines them with large amounts of coffee and RedBull.

Then, there’s the big guy – Britney’s former bodyguard Tony Baretto.

“He became very concerned about the children and their safety,” Baretto’s lawyer, Gloria Allred said at a press conference Monday.

Greeted by a media mob, Baretto, showed up for a child custody hearing in LA between Spears and Federline, accompanied by Allred and ready to testify against Britney.

“Our client was prepared to testify on issues of nudity by Ms. Spears, drug use and safety issues involving the children,” Allred said.

These serious allegations could lead to Britney losing custody of her children sources have speculated.

Baretto remained mum while Allred spoke to the press. Baretto, who held hands with his wife during the press conference, worked for Britney earlier this year.

“He was terminated because he did not hear her when she asked him to pick up her hat,” Allred claimed.

When a reporter asked why it has taken so long for Baretto to come forward if he was concerned about the children, Allred said issues of safety were involved.

“Privacy,” she answered. “We have been concerned about his privacy and safety. We didn’t want people coming to his home and you know, disturbing his young children.”

Laura Wasser, Brit’s lawyer at the time, attended the hearing and branded Baretto, “not a reliable witness.”

On Monday both Wasser and management company – The Firm, parted ways with the star.

Meanwhile, the kids were spending time with Grandma, Britney’s mother Lynn. Paparazzi captured her taking a stroll with them, near Kevin Federline’s home.

Monday night, Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn Spears attended a concert by Britney’s ex – Justin Timberlake with her dad. She had no comment on Baretto’s allegations.

Alicia Silverstone Gets Naked For PETA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 18, 2007) – Longtime PETA supporter Alicia Silverstone has taken off her clothes in a new ad campaign for the organization.

In a series of print and video spots, the very naked (though covered where it counts) actress poses, sprawled out in front of a pool.

In the print version, the words “I’m a Alicia Silverstone, and I’m a vegetarian,” appear above the nude actress. Silverstone says the same words in the video rendition of the ad, also noting that “there’s nothing in the world that’s changed me as much as this. I feel so much better and have so much more energy.”

The PETA-Silverstone campaign will air on Food Network, Lifetime and E! in Houston before expanding nationwide.

Kanye West Headed To Chart Victory Over 50 Cent

NEW YORK, NY (September 18, 2007) — It’s not like Kanye West needed an ego boost, but here it comes: Sales figures appear to confirm his “Graduation” album outsold 50 Cent’s “Curtis” in the much-hyped rap sales showdown.

Although Nielsen SoundScan figures for the albums’ first-week sales were to be released Tuesday night, West’s label was already proclaiming victory.

But West was hardly rubbing it in 50’s face. In fact, he said he was humbled by the apparent win.

“It feels overwhelming,” West told The Associated Press, as he walked to Def Jam’s offices on Tuesday afternoon. “Everyone is coming up to me and telling me how proud they are of me.”

“We’re not gloating,” Def Jam President Jay-Z told AP. “He’s celebrating his win. ... in his mind, he believed he could win the whole time.”

Both albums appeared to have sold well over 500,000 copies since being released Sept. 11, but 50’s performance was still a considerable letdown. His last album, 2005’s “The Massacre,” sold 1.1million in its first week.

Last month, 50 didn’t think of West as much of a competitor: “It’s great marketing on Def Jam’s part, by putting us out there at the same time and make like we can actually be compared on some level,” he told The Associated Press. In another interview, he said he would retire if West outsold him.

But while West is enjoying a No. 2 position on the charts with his hit “Stronger,” 50 has struggled to connect with radio. None of his songs have matched past smashes like “In Da Club“; even his single “Ayo Technology,” featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, is languishing at No. 19.

50’s album was originally scheduled to be released in June on Interscope Records, a division of Universal Music Group, but was pushed back to Sept. 11. Soon after, Kanye West, whose album was supposed to come out sometime in late summer, pushed his date to Sept. 11 as well. But Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chairman of Island Def Jam, also a division of Universal, says it wasn’t initially intended to be a jab at 50.

“The decision was really driven by the (MTV Video Music Awards), because the VMAs were on Sept. 9 ... we wanted to use it as a launching pad again for this album,” he said.

West said it was his idea to go directly against 50.

“I was the underdog because I sold less records in the past, so it was a win-win for me,” he said. “If I lost, everyone would be happy that I even went up against him. People have this perception of me being arrogant, but would an arrogant person risk the chance of coming in the second spot just to be a part of history? To me, it’s more about fans and the entertainment value and good music.”

It ended up the music industry version of Ali-Frazier, with the avalanche of pre-fight hype to match. 50 routinely trash-talked West, but it seemed to be in good fun: The pair appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards and BET’s “106 & Park” together, and on the cover or Rolling Stone. Both admitted the battle was a great marketing tool.

“The rivalry helped both of them” said Jay-Z. “It was definitely one of those moments in the game that was exciting, everybody could pick a side and weigh in on and have an opinion ... it garnered a lot of attention.”

West said the quality of his music was the key reason he apparently prevailed: “I think my music is really inspirational and I really made it for the people. I really understood that in this Internet age people are their own superstars ... the best bet that we had was to make a soundtrack to their own lives.”

West said he was especially touched that he had such a groundswell of support given some of the negative media attention he’s gotten of late; namely, his meltdown at the VMAs after being shut out (though he poked fun at himself during Sunday’s Emmy Awards).

“With all the negativity that the press tries to put on me, this perception that they try to create of me being a really bad person. For so many fans to go out and say, ‘We still want to buy Kanye’s album,‘ means a lot to me,” he says. “This is a really pivotal moment for me emotionally.”

50 Cent, who’s planning a tour for his album, was conciliatory: “I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years. Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week. This marks a great moment for hip hop music, one that will go down in history.

Whether he would make good on his threat to retire wasn’t addressed; Reid said he hoped he wouldn’t: “I’d like to see him making music for the next 25 years, he’s that talented.”

Jay-Z, who is featured on a new 50 Cent remix of his hit “I Get Money,” said this setback could actually benefit 50 in the long run.

“The worst thing about success is it makes you complacent. I think when you face any type of adversity it makes you dig deep ... everyone goes through it, all the greats go through it,” he said. “In his music, he hadn’t gone through any type of adversity. ... he’ll come back and make great music.”

If so, 50 may end up being a thorn in Def Jam’s side. In a recent interview, a miffed 50 threatened to release projects whenever Def Jam had a high-priority release.

In light of West’s victory, Jay-Z considered that threat a good thing.

“We would really appreciate that,” he quipped. “If he can do that, I will fax over our release dates effective immediately.”

Britney Spears Ordered To Undergo Drug, Alcohol Testing

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 18, 2007) – Britney Spears has been ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week, Access Hollywood has learned.

In court documents obtained by Access, a judge ordered the tests for the pop star, stating “Based on the Evidence presented, the Court finds that there is a habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol by the Petitioner” (Spears).

However, the court also said the results of those tests will not be made public.

Britney has also been ordered to meet with a “parenting coach” at least eight hours a week, who will observe her interaction with her two sons – Sean Preston and Jayden James.

The parenting coach will evaluate Brit’s motherly skills and will file a written progress report to the courts on October 22.

Both Britney and Kevin have also been ordered “to engage in joint in co-parenting counseling.”

In addition, the court mandated that “neither party shall consume alcohol, or other non-prescription controlled substances” while with the kids or within 12 hours immediately prior to having custody of the kids.

Contrary to earlier online reports that suggested Kevin would be granted temporary physical custody of the kids, the court declined to modify the existing agreement, which means the current 50/50 split will remain in effect for now.

Both parents have also been ordered to refrain from “using corporal punishment” in dealing with the kids.

The matter will now continue as a closed-door hearing. The next court date is set for November 26.

Vanessa Hudgens Sued For $150K In Unpaid Legal Fees

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 18, 2007) – As if her nude photo scandal wasn’t enough, “High School Musical” star Vanessa Hudgens now finds herself being sued.

According to court papers obtained by Access Hollywood, a former lawyer for the “HSM” star says she owes him $150,000 in legal fees.

The lawsuit, filed by Brian L. Schall in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, alleges a breach of contract and unjust enrichment by the 18-year-old Hudgens.

“Perhaps Vaness Hudgens… needs to go back to school to learn a very basic lesson in contractual obligations,” Schall states in the lawsuit.

The suit claims Hudgens and Schall entered into a written contract for legal services in October 2005.

According to the suit, Schall claims he advanced costs and expenses on Hudgens’ behalf for her songwriting and recording career.

A rep for Hudgens was not available for comment.

Michael Jackson's Family Confronts 'Untrue And Inaccurate' Reports

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 7, 2007) — Michael Jackson’s mother and four of his brothers have formed a united front in dismissing reports of his alleged dependency on pain killers and alcohol.

An open letter to the media, signed by Katherine Jackson and sons Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Jackie, responds to what the family views as “troubling and heinous” rumors about Michael.

An attempted drug intervention and takeover of Michael’s business affairs are among the rumors denied by the family in the letter, which also takes aim at quoted “sources” believed to be making false claims for profit.

A particular target of the letter is People magazine, which has published a story on Michael and his children in their Sept. 17 issue.

A rep for People magazine provided the following statement to Access Hollywood:

“We stand by our story. Throughout the process we gave Mr. Jackson’s rep, Raymone Bain, the opportunity to respond and we reported her comments.”

Justin Timberlake Postpones Tour Dates

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Septemeber 11, 2007) — Justin Timberlake fans in Sacramento and San Jose will have to wait a bit longer to get “Lovestoned.”

Justin’s “FutureSex/LoveShow” concerts scheduled for last night and tomorrow in the California cities have been postponed, due to vocal strain suffered by the “SexyBack” singer.

A rep for Timberlake issued a statement to Access Hollywood assuring fans that the shows will go on...and soon:

“Tour promoter, AEG Live, has rescheduled Justin Timberlake’s concerts in Sacramento and San Jose. The shows were rescheduled following a doctor mandated several day vocal rest prescribed to the artist to repair vocal strain inflicted during his MTV VMA performance and months of rigorous touring.

The FutureSex/LoveShows will go on. The Sacramento concert, originally scheduled for Monday, September 10th, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 25th and the San Jose concert, originally scheduled for Wednesday, September 12th, has been moved to Sunday, September 23rd.

Former “American Idol” hopeful-turned-“Dreamgirls” Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will join the cast of the “Sex and the City: The Movie,” reports Variety.

Hudson will play the assistant to Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker).

The film will pick up the lives of the show’s four main characters – Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda – four years later from where the HBO series wrapped up.

Filming is scheduled to begin in New York on September 19.

Don Cheadle has signed on to star opposite Emma Roberts in the live-action feature “Hotel For Dogs,” reports Variety.

Based on Lois Duncan’s 1971 children’s book of the same name, the film follows two orphaned teens who hide dozens of stray dogs in an abandoned hotel.

Cheadle will step into the role of a struggling social worker who helps keep the kids out of trouble.

Most recently seen on the big screen reprising his role as Basher Tarr in “Ocean’s Thirteen,” Cheadle is currently filming the historical biopic “Toussaint,” opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Angela Bassett.

Former “O.C.” beauty Mischa Barton will star in the psychological thriller “Walled In,” reports Variety.

Based on “Les Emmeures,” the best-selling French novel by Serge Broselot, the film features Barton as a demolition company rep who oversees the razing of a mysterious building and discovers horrifying secrets and past inhabitants entombed within its walls by a vicious murderer.

Kate Bosworth has signed on for the title role in “Veronika Decides To Die,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s bestseller, Bosworth plays a woman who wakes up in a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt. When she discovers that she has a weakened heart and only days to live, she winds up finding true love and a newfound will to survive.

Bosworth hit the Toronto Film Festival earlier this week to premiere her new drama “The Girl In The Park,” where she stars opposite Sigourney Weaver.

Brazilian author Coelho’s novel “Veronika” has sold more than 9 million copies. He is best known for his book “The Alchemist.”

Former “Desperate Housewives” boy toy Jesse Metcalfe will star in the indie horror thriller “Insanitarium,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Metcalfe, who played Eva Longoria’s gardener John on Wisteria Lane, will play a man who pretends to be crazy in order to save his sister from being involuntarily hospitalized.

However, once inside the institute, the siblings discover that a doctor is using his patients like lab rats, forcing them to take a drug that turns them into flesh-eating psychopaths.

Metcalfe will reprise his “Desperate Housewives” role for an upcoming episode of the hit ABC drama.

In a post on TommyLee.TV, Lee branded Rock, “Kid Pebble,” following the Sunday night incident during which the most recent Mr. Pam Anderson punched Lee.

Kelsey Grammer: Standing Up For His Slain Sister

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 11, 2007) – Kelsey Grammer is returning to TV this fall as a disgraced local newsman in the FOX sitcom “Back to You.”

But when Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush paid a visit to the set, it was all jokes aside as Kelsey opened up about one of the most painful chapters in his life – the man who killed his sister.

In the summer of 1975, Kelsey’s 18-year-old sister was abducted, raped, slashed and left to bleed to death in Colorado Springs.

“The man who murdered your sister is eligible for parole and you’re going to attend the hearing. What do you want to accomplish?” Billy asked.

“Well, I don’t want to state things I don’t know yet. I just know that there is a hearing scheduled and I intend to appear and speak for my sister on her behalf,” Kelsey explained.

“Are you speaking to the judge?” Billy asked.

Known to generations of fans as TV’s Dr. Frasier Crane, Kelsey’s impeccable sense of comic timing has long hid his years of personal pain. By the time he was 25, Kelsey had dealt with the murder of his father, the tragic slaying of his sister and the death of his two half-brothers in a scuba diving accident.

For years, Kelsey turned to drugs and alcohol, which led to multiple arrests and even time behind bars in 1990.

But when his little sister was killed, it was Kelsey who brought her body home to Florida to be buried. And now more than 30 years later, he may finally get the opportunity to speak for the young girl silenced by a killer.

“I intend to be there when it’s important for me to be there. He also killed six other people. This is not a person that I think should be back out on the street,” Kelsey said.

Rosie: Barbara Walters Should 'Step Back'

NEW YORK, NY (September 11, 2007) — Rosie O’Donnell’s memoir, “Celebrity Detox,” is already causing a commotion before its October 2 release date.

The book recounts (among other things) Rosie’s time co-hosting “The View,” and O’Donnell reportedly indicates in her writings that the show’s frontwoman, Barbara Walters, should retire.

“At some point, a person gets tired. It’s inevitable,” Rosie writes, according to a report in The NY Post. “Barbara Walters is almost twice my age . . . at some point it becomes necessary to step back.”

“Everyone has to go. Going is part of the gig,” Rosie, 45, reportedly says of Barbara, 77, in the book.

“And I would be less-than-honest if I were to say that there is no trouble between Barbara and I,” O’Donnell writes, according to the report. “I mean, our differences are obvious.”

Walters, who has read the book, expressed her reaction to it in a statement to Access Hollywood:

“Rosie has written a sad book, but I choose to focus on the happier times that we had and the happy times that we hope to have in the future.”

A publicist for O’Donnell told Access, “Rosie loves Barbara, always has, always will.”

Despite any “differences” O’Donnell may have allegedly had with Walters in the past, she defends Barbara when it comes to her involvement in Rosie’s drawn-out feud with Donald Trump, according to the NY Post’s Page Six.

“I did not anticipate that [Trump] would be cruel enough to do what he did to Barbara,” Rosie reportedly writes in the book. “She should have been left alone.”

Walters was unwittingly brought into the fray when Trump claimed to various media outlets that she did not like Rosie, and that she regretted putting her on the show — a claim Walters denied.

As for the present day, “The View” has moved on since Rosie’s departure last May. New co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd are firmly in place alongside Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and Walters is looking forward to a “wonderful year” with them on the show.

On a visit to “The View” set yesterday, Barbara told Access that she doesn’t anticipate any “personal” feuds this year, and expects the show to return to lively, friendly debates.

As for Rosie’s on-air claim that she would occasionally return to guest host, Barbara indicated to Access that O’Donnell will most likely not be back.

Kathy Griffin's 'Jesus' Speech Costs Her Emmy Spotlight

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 11, 2007) — Before Kathy Griffin won a creative arts Emmy last weekend for her reality show, “My Life on the D-List,” she joked that an award would move her to the C-list.

She was right: “C” as in censored.

The TV academy said her raucous acceptance speech will be edited when the event, which was taped, is shown Saturday on the E! channel. The main prime-time Emmy Awards air the next night on Fox.

“Kathy Griffin’s offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night,” the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said in a statement Monday.

In her speech, Griffin said that “a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.”

She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, “This award is my god now!”

The comedian’s remarks were condemned Monday by Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called them a “vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech.”

According to the TV academy and E!, when the four hour-plus ceremony is edited into a two-hour program, Griffin’s remarks will be shown in “an abbreviated version” in which some language may be bleeped.

The program was in production and unfinished, an E! spokeswoman said Monday.

Requests for comment were left Monday evening by phone and e-mail with Griffin’s publicist. They were not immediately returned.

The Catholic League, an anti-defamation group, called on the TV academy to “denounce Griffin’s obscene and blasphemous comment” at Sunday’s ceremony.

The academy said Monday it had no plans to address the issue in the prime-time broadcast.

The organization may have another delicate issue to consider, this one involving an off-color fake music video that aired last December on “Saturday Night Live” and won a creative arts Emmy for best song.

Andy Samberg of “SNL” said Saturday that he had yet to be asked by the TV academy to perform the tune with Timberlake on the Fox broadcast, but he was willing. Timberlake, on a concert tour, is scheduled to be in Los Angeles next weekend.

The subject of their “(Blank) in a Box” video: wrapping a certain part of the male anatomy and presenting it to a loved one as a holiday present.

The academy has said that “show elements are in the process of being worked out.”

Malawian Official Removed From Madonna Adoption Case

BLANTYRE, Malawi (September 3, 2007) — The senior Malawian child welfare official who was to go to London to assess whether Madonna could adopt a little boy from the southern African country has been removed from the high-profile case, officials said Monday.

The removal of Penstone Kilembe, the director of Malawi’s Child Welfare Services, follows allegations that he solicited money from the singer for the trip.

Simon Chisale, the country’s chief social welfare officer, said the government had gone to court last week to have Kilembe replaced as the assessor in the Madonna adoption. Chisale said he was now planning to go to London this week to carry out the delayed assessment of toddler David Banda’s progress.

Kilembe, who returned to Malawi late Monday after attending a conference in the United States last week, said he had not heard of the move and denied any wrongdoing.

“I am not aware of these developments. I have just arrived from New York and nobody from my office has told me anything. I will be in the office tomorrow,” he said.

Madonna and her husband, film director Guy Ritchie, were granted temporary custody of David, then 13 months old, last October. His father had placed him in an orphanage after his mother died.

Critics accused Madonna, who found David in the orphanage while in Malawi to launch a project to help the country’s 2 million AIDS orphans, of using her celebrity status to circumvent Malawian adoption laws — allegations she denies.

The latest developments are likely to raise concerns that Malawi’s child welfare department is in a state of disarray at a time when it is under international scrutiny.

Madonna’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said in a statement that the adoption is going forward as originally planned.

“The plans to finalize the adoption of Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s son, David, are proceeding as outlined almost a year ago — the day the Malawian Government granted them their ‘interim’ adoption,” the statement read. “There has been absolutely no interference with Government Officials or use of Madonna’s ‘celebrity’ to speed up this adoption as reported. All appropriate legal requirements are being followed, including a home visit.”

The superstar’s rep added that the family is eagerly awaiting the final adoption.

“Madonna and her entire family look forward to being granted the final adoption early next year — 18 months following the original interim adoption order,” the statement concluded.

There have been newspaper reports in Malawi that Minister of Gender and Child Welfare Kate Kainja-Kaluluma stopped Kilembe from going to London because he had allegedly solicited funds from Madonna for the trip without the minister’s knowledge or permission. According to the original custody order, Kilembe was appointed to oversee the adoption, which included inspections of the star’s home in May and December.

Kilembe, who disputes the allegations, said he had spoken to the minister and that the matter had been resolved.

Malawian rights organizations have said their government needs help monitoring Madonna’s planned adoption.

In an affidavit presented to the court, child welfare officials said Kilembe was leaving the ministry and “moving on to a new posting.” It did not give details on his new position.

Chisale confirmed Monday that he had been appointed to replace Kilembe but refused to discuss the adoption further.

“Yes, I have just been informed I would do the assessment but I am not mandated to discuss the issue until perhaps we finalize the report,” he said.

The couple’s custody order could be revoked if it is found that David was being treated differently from their other children, Lourdes, 10, and Rocco, 6, or if the toddler’s rights were being violated in any way.

Bill Murray Talks Stockholm Arrest

VENICE, Italy (September 4, 2007) — Bill Murray has addressed his bizarre golf cart incident in Stockholm.

Last week, the star of “Lost In Translation” and “Groundhog Day,” was stopped by Swedish authorities, who told the AP the actor, when he was pulled over, smelled of alcohol.

Murray, who is attending the 64th annual Venice Film Festival, told reporters Monday, that authorities assumed he was inebriated.

“[The police] asked me to come over and they assumed that I was drunk and I explained to them that I was a golfer,” the AP reports Murray saying.

Murray said he was hanging out with friends following a golf tournament.

When no one offered to take the wheel and drive people home, Murray took the reins.

“I ended up stopping and dropping people off on the way like a bus. I had about six people in the thing and I dropped them off one at a time and as the last couple were getting out, who wished to be dropped off at a 7-Eleven. ... I didn’t know they had 7-Elevens in Stockholm,” Murray said.

Swedish police say Murray refused a breathalyzer so “we applied the old method – a blood test,” Detective-Inspector Christer Holmlund of the Stockholm Police said at the time.

Murray was released following the test. Results are expected in another week.

Whoopi Makes Her Big Debut On 'The View'

NEW YORK, NY (September 4, 2007) — “The View” kicked off its eleventh season today with the big debut of new co-host Whoopi Goldberg.

An enthusiastic standing ovation welcomed Whoopi and fellow co-hosts Barbara Walters, Joy Behar and (a very pregnant) Elisabeth Hasselbeck as they took their places on the revamped orange and yellow set.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg offered his own welcoming words with a letter, in which he jokingly inferred that they picked the wrong “berg” for the job. “Goldberg, Bloomberg,” his letter read. “You must’ve gotten confused. We look so much alike.”

The laughs didn’t end there, as the women easily played off each other to hilarious effect during the “hot topics” portion of the show.

Whoopi commented on the news that hotel mogul Leona Helmsley had left her dog $12 million dollars upon her death, saying, “If I’d have known that’s what she wanted, I would’ve been her — well, you know what I’m saying,” prompting Joy to chime in: “You would’ve been her b*tch,” to lots of laughs.

Even when “hot topics” took a more serious turn, such as in the discussion of the Michael Vick dogfighting case, things remained civil and friendly among the hosts.

Danny DeVito, who stirred up some headlines when he appeared seemingly “tipsy” on the show last season, returned as the sole guest of the episode.

DeVito said that he had been merely tired during that infamous appearance, not drunk, and went on to discuss both his Premium Limoncello beverage line and the new season of his TV series, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

As the show closed, Whoopi stated that it had been “a lot of fun,” and gave the sign-off, “Have a great day and take time to enjoy the view.”

As for the mysterious fifth co-host expected to join the show?

Walters told Access Hollywood after today’s taping, “We will shortly be adding a new member to the panel, and it’s not George Clooney as some have suggested — but it is somebody the audience will know (already). That’s all I want to say.”

Rita Cosby's Anna Nicole Book Sparks Criticism From Birkhead, Stern

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 4, 2007) – Investigative journalist and author Rita Cosby has gone on the record with startling new claims about Larry Birkhead and Howard K. Stern, in her new book about the death of former Playmate, Anna Nicole Smith.

Cosby’s book, “Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story Behind Anna Nicole Smith’s Death,” claims Birkhead, the father of Smith’s only daughter Dannielynn, engaged in a homosexual tryst with her longtime companion Howard K. Stern.

“It’s crazy and of course it’s not true,” an angry Birkhead told Access Hollywood’s Executive Producer Rob Silverstein in a phone call Monday afternoon. “Rita Cosby is going to get sued for everything she’s got.”

In an interview with Cosby conducted by Access Hollywood’s Tony Potts Tuesday afternoon, the author responded to Birkhead’s statement.

“I’m sure he would deny everything,” she told Access. “I’m sure he’d tell you the sky is green and stars are falling from it if he could.”

Cosby said she spoke to a number of sources including private investigators who spoke to two nannies who allegedly say they saw Smith, watching a tape, of Birkhead and Stern engaged in a sexual act.

“What I’ve heard actually is that they saw Anna looking at a video tape . . . some sort of tape. They have seen this tape and they told private investigators,” Cosby said.

Birkhead told Access Hollywood’s Silverstein that the ex-MSNBC journalist “never bothered to call me about the book,” a claim Cosby acknowledged. He added that he attempted to reach Cosby himself, but she never got back to him.

“Not true,” Cosby refuted.

Birkhead suggested “Blonde Ambition,” be removed from the non-fiction section in stores.

“The book should be sitting on the fiction shelves in bookstores next to ‘Harry Potter,‘” Birkhead told Access.

Cosby responded strongly to his suggestion.

“My response is Larry Birkhead is in Harry Potter-land himself if he’s sitting back and believing the American public [believes] nothing happened between him and Howard K. Stern,” she retorted.

L. Lin Wood, a lawyer for Stern also lashed out at Cosby’s book in a statement obtained by Access Hollywood.

“The more information I have received over the weekend about Ms. Cosby’s book, the more convinced I am that she has, as a practical matter, authored a work of pure fiction,” Wood’s statement on behalf of Stern read. “It appears that Ms. Cosby has joined the ranks of tabloid journalists who are willing to publish the print equivalent of sewerage to engage in character assassination for profit.”

Stern and his legal team are currently attempting to obtain a copy of “Blonde Ambition,” which they plan to take action on.

“If the statements about Mr. Stern cited in weekend media reports are in fact published in her book, Mr. Stern will sue Ms. Cosby and her publisher for libel,” Wood’s statement read. “All of the accusations in the published reports are false and defamatory.”

If the men do pursue legal action, Cosby told Access, she won’t be surprised.

“Larry Birkhead was threatening to file suit before he even knew what was in this book and I think that should speak volumes . . . I’m not surprised they’re threatening to sue. They would sue a paperboy if they could,” she said.

As for Hatten, from whom the relationship allegations appear to stem, Wood called into question her credibility. In his statement he noted that on Friday August 31, he “reminded Ms. Cosby and her publisher of the obvious fact that Jackie Hatten is not a credible or reliable source for any accusation against Mr. Stern.”

Cosby however, stands by her source.“There are a number of things she has said and they have proven true,” Cosby noted.

Nicole Kidman's Shocking Engagement Revelation

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 4, 2007) – Every big star wants to be on the cover of Vanity Fair – it’s the place to be for the Who’s Who of Hollywood.

But Vanity Fair has some high standards – if they put you on the cover, you better be ready to deliver some bombshells. Luckily, as the cover girl of the October issue, Nicole Kidman certainly didn’t disappoint.

While Nicole opens her blouse on the cover, it’s inside the pages where she truly gets revealing, telling the magazine she was engaged in between her marriages to Tom Cruise and Keith Urban.

So who was the lucky man?

“I couldn’t get it out of her,” Vanity Fair’s senior west coast editor Krista Smith told Access Hollywood.

Most notably, Nicole dated movie producer Steven Bing and rocker Lenny Kravitz during the five years between Tom and Keith.

In 2004, Kravitz was cryptic when Access asked him about his relationship with Nicole.

“We’re really great friends, you know, and um...have been and always will be. But you know, we keep the what, how and when and all that to ourselves,” a coy Kravitz said.

As for Keith, Nicole admitted to Vanity Fair it “wasn’t like the earth shook” when they first met.

For the magazine photo shoot, Nicole was happy and relaxed as she posed seaside in her native Australia. However, she revealed the past year was a difficult one.

Nicole stood by Keith’s side when he went to rehab, just four months after their wedding. However, Smith got the feeling quitting on the relationship was never an option.

“I don’t think it would ever occur to her to walk away from that,” Smith added.

Despite Nicole calling it a “very, very, very bad, painful place,” the couple is now in a much different place, as they prepare for a family.

“I’m yearning to have one,” Nicole told the magazine. “I think I would be very sad if I wasn’t able to have a baby.”

Britney Lines Up Two Songs For MTV VMAs

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 4, 2007) – Britney Spears will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend, according to USA Today.

The newspaper reports the pop singer is set to perform two tracks – “Gimme More,” and a song called “Cry.”

Spears’ dancer Ruben Dario confirms magician and “Mind Freak” Criss Angel will help Britney’s performance out. She will use mirrors, which will help the star to disappear and appear.

Britney’s new track, “Gimme More,” premiered for the first time on radio last week. It is expected to feature on her first new album of original material in four years, which is due November 13.

Brad Pitt Talks Parenting. . . And His Past With Jennifer Aniston

VENICE, Italy (September 4, 2007) — As Brad Pitt looks to the future with partner Angelina Jolie and their children, he speaks openly about the friendship he still shares with ex-wife Jennifer Aniston since their divorce in 2005.

“Jen and I still maintain a deep friendship and have a lot of life together that isn’t erased in any way,” he tells V Magazine, hitting newsstands on Friday.

Brad, who sports “Old Hollywood” style on four separate covers of the magazine, adds, “The most important thing about that time was for Jen and me to figure out if — how do I put it? — if we didn’t want to go on without any outside influence. Is this where we got off? Have we taken this as far as we wanted to? Those questions had to be answered before an attraction for Angie could be answered.”

And now, while raising one biological child and three adopted children with Angelina, Brad has a new question to be answered: is it time for another kid?

At a Venice Film Festival press conference on Sunday, Brad spoke of the ups and downs of fatherhood, saying, “It’s the most fun I have ever had and also the biggest pain in the ass I have ever experienced.”

When asked by an Italian state TV reporter whether he and Angelina were ready for a fifth child, Brad replied: “Yeah, we’re ready.”

He didn’t say whether they planned another biological child or if they would adopt.

Brad was in Venice promoting his upcoming film, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” and he told reporters that having four kids “makes me much more efficient because that’s the main focus. It makes me feel when I do have time to work, I really do have to focus because there is a really short window to get something done. I am quite pleased by it all.”

But there is one specific drawback for Brad when it comes to raising four youngsters:

“I love it and I can’t recommend it any more highly,” he said, “although sleep is nonexistent.”

'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin Remembered One Year Later

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 4, 2007) – A year ago, the world tragically lost the “Crocodile Hunter,” Steve Irwin.

His death, at the age of 44 from the barb of a stingray, received while filming a TV show with Philippe Cousteau, was mourned by fans around the world including the Australian Prime Minister and film star Russell Crowe.

“It was way too soon for all of us. We have lost a friend, a champion,” Crowe said to mourners who gathered at Irwin’s memorial service, held at the Australia Zoo on September 20, 2006.

Irwin, who in addition to his popular show on “Animal Planet,” worked at the zoo where the memorial was held, was known for his love of animals. He devoted his life to animal conservationism.

At his memorial service, Irwin’s then 8-year-old daughter Bindi, hailed him as her hero.

“My Daddy was my hero,” she told the crowd. “He was always there for me when I needed him. He listened to me and taught me so many things. But most of all he was fun.”

As part of the public memorial entitled “He Changed Our World,” actress Cameron Diaz said in a video presentation that Irwin was incredibly popular in the United States.

“America just flipped for him,” said Diaz. “Every kid was in love with the idea of being him.”

Actor Kevin Costner said in the video that Irwin was “fearless ... He let us see who he was. That is being brave in today’s society.”
